CERTIFICATION ROCKET
The Flying Lobster
My L1 and L2 high power rocketry certification rocket
The Flying Lobster was my first high power rocket; I built it from a LOC-IV X2 kit. In preparation for my L1 launch, I learned about about aerodynamics, simulation, hands-on fabrication techniques, and rocket stability.
Some things I didn't learn until launch day, like the embarrassment of showing up with an unpainted rocket. I also got experience making field repairs when my rocket's retention harness tore on my first launch. Thankfully, I got L1 certified on my second launch.
I needed a paint job for my L2 launch, and I went with the lobster theme because of a running joke that NAR's rules technically don't ban sending a lobster up in a rocket. I swapped out the torn nylon retention harness for one made of Kevlar and was feeling confident about my now battle-tested rocket. With a 649 N·s J-class motor, The Flying Lobster hit a maximum velocity of 471 mph and an apogee over 4,000 feet.
My L2 certification flight was successful, but the rocket landed in a tree. It's a good thing I'm not afraid of heights.
After my brief stint as an arborist, I got my L2 certification.
